Tribute to Tortorella
Things are not working well at the moment for John Tortorella: The most successful US-American ice hockey coach ever was released by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
No question - his team played a disappointing season, earning only 71 points as the worst club in the NHL Eastern Conference, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2001-02.
In 2004, Tortolla had led the Lightning to their first and only Stanley Cup-triumph and won the Jack Adams Award for best coach in the same year.
The 49-year-old had started his job as a head coach in Florida on January 6, 2001 and is still the most successful NHL coach born in the USA.
He was responsible for the also not very successful US-team at this year’s IHF World Championship, held in Canada in May. The US lost against Finland 2-3 in the quarterfinals already.
